“HB 3090 would ban the sale of nicotine and tobacco products in flavors other than tobacco. This prohibition would include everything from smoke-free nicotine pouches to vapor products and menthol cigarettes.

This bill is scheduled for a hearing on

Prior to any public hearing, please take a moment to contact your lawmakers in Oregon and urge them to oppose HB 3090.”

Oregon – Stop a Flavor Ban! (HB 3090) – CASAA

(March 31, 2023) Interesting study. Basically, they are saying that nicotine is not a concern with surgical outcomes.

Of 147,506 active smokers, 25,651 (17.4%) were prescribed NRT within 2 days of admission. Patients treated with NRT were younger; less likely to be black or Hispanic; more likely to have Medicaid; and more likely to have a diagnosis of alcohol or other substance use disorder, or COPD, compared with those who were not treated. In the propensity-matched analysis, there was no association between receipt of NRT and in-hospital complications (OR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.93-1.05), mortality (OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.68-1.04), all-cause 30-day readmissions (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.97-1.07), or 30-day readmission for wound complications (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.86-1.07).

This is the first large observational study of surgical patients to demonstrate that perioperative NRT is not associated with adverse outcomes after surgery. These results strengthen the evidence that NRT should be prescribed routinely in the perioperative period.”

(Feb. 9, 2023) Flavor ban proposed for Oregon. AGAIN. HB 3090 sponsors pretend their FLAVOR BAN “will protect kids from the evil genius of hiding the tarry, noxious taste of ignited tobacco,” but THEIR REAL TARGET is low risk flavored vapes, which contain no tobacco and are NOT ignited.

Because of this, there is a new “Call to Action” from Oregon (Consumer Advocates for Smokefree Alternatives Association). Please, please, please follow the link and add your voice telling our state legislators to vote NO on this bill here:  Oregon – Stop a Flavor Ban! (HB 3090) – CASAA

(February 17, 2023) “Does vaping cause popcorn lung? Does e-liquid contain antifreeze? Will vaping make your lungs collapse? In this shareable video, CASAA takes on some of the most common myths, exaggerations and misinformation about nicotine vaping products!”
Once again, the Feds want to impose a tax on vaping products. This is one of the most ridiculous proposals yet. Please sign the call to action at the link below to send your Congress members.
NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION: *URGENT UPDATE!!* No longer raising taxes on combustible tobacco products, NEW VERSION targets ANY TYPE of nicotine used in harm-reducing products at $50.33 per 1,810 mg! Please TAKE ACTION NOW even if you already did it before!

OREGON: (HEADS UP!) Ignoring that adults are returning to smoking in areas where vapor products are excessively taxed, sales restricted and flavors banned, anti-vape group recommends vapor products be excessively taxed, sales restricted and flavors banned, in order to reduce youth use. They also continue to lie that nicotine vaping has a link to lung injuries and COVID-19.

Oregon Senate bill to ban flavored vaping products dead after revenue concerns

A small victory, but note that Senator Laurie Monnes Anderson (the sponsor of the vape ban bills) doesn’t sound like she is done with us vapers yet. Also, what the Oregon legislature does going forward may well hinge on whether or not they get their vape tax passed by voters in November. Sadly, this may be the only way to back them off entirely – we all know how much government loves our dollars. Also, it looks like they may require vape shops to be specially licensed to operate. That we can deal with, as long as they are reasonable about it.

Lawmakers Push Proposal to Ban All Flavored Vaping Products

All flavored vaping products may become banned in Oregon, as state lawmakers look for answers to curb nicotine addiction among Oregon’s youth.

Sen. Laurie Monnes Anderson, D-Gresham, is backing a proposal this legislative session that would ban all flavored vaping products. The move comes amid heightened state and national awareness about flavored vaping products and the public health risk of vaping as a gateway to nicotine addiction.

The proposal would make Oregon’s standards stricter than the current federal ban that still allows menthol and tobacco-flavored vaping….

On Monday, October 7th, we are asking vape shops, online retailers, distributors, manufacturers, and other entities that want to see vaping survive to donate some, or even all, of their profits for the day to the American Vaping Association (AVA) and the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association (CASAA). Additionally, we are asking vapers around the United States to support small vape businesses around the United States on October 7th by shopping at businesses participating in National Save Vaping Day. We suggest donations be split between the organizations equally.

We are asking that donations be made to both the AVA and CASAA equally because both organizations are fighting non-stop for adults to have continued access to flavored vaping products.

Since the ‘vaping-related’ lung illness story started in the news, AVA President Gregory Conley has been constantly in the media pointing out that the legal and regulated nicotine vaping products industry should not be blamed for conditions associated with illicit THC vaping products. He also travels around the country speaking on and doing media in the defense of vaping products and tobacco harm reduction. AVA will use donated funds to support the expansion of their current operation, including a major professional public relations effort with a firm that specializes in crisis communications.

E-Cigarettes and Lung Disease

The House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy held a hearing on the relationship between e-cigarettes and an outbreak in lung disease. The committee heard testimony from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Principal Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat about the health effects of e-cigarette use and what officials knew about a string of lung illnesses resulting from e-cigarettes and vaping. A second panel included testimony from additional medical professionals as well as a mother whose daughter had been hospitalized after vaping and a former smoker who used e-cigarettes as an alternative to combustible cigarettes.
